BMW Recalls 2008 F650GS Motorcycles for Brake Disc Fastener Defect

BMW has issued a recall of certain 2008 F650GS motorcycles.

Due to production and assembly tolerances, the length of one or more of the front brake disc fasteners may be insufficient. If the length of a fastener was insufficient, this could result in the fastener not being tightened according to specifications. If this happened, the fastener could work loose from its threads. In some cases involving multiple fasteners, the brake disc could loosen, increasing the risk of a crash.

373 units are affected.

Check out my Motorcycle Recalls feature for more details.

Rex KL-35

Rex is one of the rarest, strangest of the tiddler brands. The German company built five 50cc models in the late '50's and early '60's. There were several other European brands named Rex, but this one may be the most obscure. These 50cc tiddlers were built in Munich and distributed out of Salt Lake City. How's that for strange? If I had not seen this ad for the top-of-the-line KL-35 in the August '62 issue of Cycle World, I might never have discovered this unusual tiddler. I sent off for a full-line, 1962 brochure when I saw this ad, and I'll put those scans on Tiddlerosis when I get time. I am posting this ad photo first because it proudly displays some of the KL-35's features.

Let's begin at the bottom of the Rex lineup and work our way up to the king beastie shown here. The cheapest Rex was called simply the Motorbike Kit. Shown in the brochure was an English-style touring bicycle with a gas tank attached to the top frame bar and an engine nestled in the V of the frame, just above the pedals. I don't know if this machine retained its original three-speed handshift or not. Next up the scale was the Piccolo Moped, which was sort of a heavy-duty bicycle frame with the engine mounted in front of the pedals. The middle of the line was the Monaco Moped, a machine roughly equivalent to the much more common Allstate Moped.

Next up was a model called the Como Deluxe. This was one of those tiddlers that you don't know quite what to call it. I have photos of 1959 and 1961 models with pedals, but the '62 version in the brochure had a conventional set of footpegs and kickstarter. The photos of the early ones are blue and the '62 is white. The Como was shaped like a motorcycle, but there was a shallow step-through area behind the conventional gas tank. The tire diameter was larger than that of the Allstate Compact, but less than that of the Honda Cub. The Como was like a primitive, German version of the cycle/scooter hybrids that would come much later. The engine was fan-cooled and the left side kickstarter tilted forward like that on a Super Hawk. The three-speed handshift was on pressed-steel handlebars in front of a conventional dual seat. The Como was basically a toned-down version of the KL-35 in a semi-scooter suit.

The KL-35 offered numerous weight-adding features. Its fan-cooled 50cc engine pumped 4.4 horsepower through dual carbs and twin upswept exhausts. Yes, you read it right. Look at the picture again. This was a little more power than the 3.6 hp of the Como, but it still drove through a three-speed handshift. Rex touted the Earls (sic) front fork for the bike's comfortable ride and the electrics were via magneto. The 21" wheels gave it a distinctly motorcycle look, but its pressed-steel frame, fully enclosed chain, and narrow handlebars brought the sissy look back. In its favor, there was the classic German pinstriping on the fenders, and I'm sure any fourteen-year-old could be impressed by its dual input and output! Hey, that's the ticket. I happened to have been fourteen in 1962!

SEMA 2008: Kia Borrego Limited Concept

The Kia Borrego Limited SEMA Concept

With the Escalade on the ropes, it looks like Kia might step in to rescue all those lovers of blacked-out blinged-up chromed-out big-wheeled SUVs. The metallic black Borrego Limited Concept that debuted at SEMA today gets chrome exterior mirrors, chrome upper and lower grilles, chrome door handles, a chrome rear bumper insert, and "flashy 22-inch Avarus chrome wheels." Inside it gets (faux) alligator skin. That's right. A Kia Borrego with (faux) alligator skin. And what good is a (faux) alligator without a TV and a DVD player to complete that "assertive and sophisticated stance fit for a motorcade as much as cruising down the Vegas strip." True, this would be generic medication compared to the Escalade's real deal, but it'll be much cheaper and probably still get the job done. Maybe. But watch out for the side effects. Have a look at the not-quite-reptilian Borrego in the gallery of high-res photos below. Oh, and for the record, the Soul will be officially revealed on the 19th, at the LA Auto Show.

Mr. Motorcycle's word challenge game

I have a challenge for you.

Rules of the game. I pick the word, you get to tie that word into motorcycles in as few words as possible. The most creative one in fewest words wins bragging rights.

The word is Potato.

I'll go first since it's my blog.

"The sound a Harley makes while idling is Potato, Potato, Potato. "

(Of course I picked the easy obvious one! It's my game!)
However, this most likely guarantees me no bragging rights.

I'll do a poll on the best one after some entries are done in comments.

You'll have three days starting tomorrow morning.

Good Luck!!!!!

SKUTER HONDA BERMESIN JET

Here's my wife's Honda Metropolitan scooter.? She wants it to go faster than 40 mph.? So I have these two little JFS 100 jet engines and I am thinking how to put them on the scooter.? Engines are 50 lbm each so weight is an issue.? Will probably use air-start with a carbon fiber tank of compressed air.? That saves weight since batteries will then not be needed.

Looks cool from the top.? Will want to make aluminum housings to go over the engines just like on a DC-9.

Bitchin' from the back too.? Should get the scooter going.? On one jet engine alone, this engine will get a kart up to 60 mph.? Looks like I have a lot of spare wire left over from the Beetle job to do the scooter.

Hope your holiday's were filled with cheer!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday experience. I am truly blessed, and can say that I have nothing more that I could ever want, (except some not so important materialistic things) of course!

Seeing as I don't post pictures of my wife or kids, I'll share a couple of Christmas pictures of the cats and dog.

I don't have pictures with cats and their new mice, 'cause, well, they get them every year. I do have a few good ones though.

Can you find Beethoven the cat in this picture?

How about now?

(Wolfie on lower step, Beethoven on upper step)
Did anyone say Cheese????

Cy's new walkin boots (first time on his feet).
Doesn't look too happy does he???

Cy's new hedge hog

Cy's new moose

It was a joyous day with friends and family.
I hope yours was as well.

Harley-Davidson Guarantees Sportster Trade-in Value

Even in these tough economic times, Harley-Davidson has found a way to lure more customers into their showroom: Allow trade-ins at the original sale price.

Harley has a plan to allow their customers who have already purchased a recent Sportster to trade it in on a larger model but essentially cancel the depreciation on the Sportster. Here's an excerpt from an article by Rick Barrett of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG) has announced a new motorcycle purchase program that guarantees the trade-in value of a Sportster when traded for one of the company's more expensive bikes.

Harley riders who either buy a new Sportster or trade in their recently purchased Sportster between Dec. 26 and March 31 will get the bike's original manufacturer's suggested retail price when they trade up to one of Harley's Big Twin or VRSC motorcycles." -- Rick Barrett, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Journal Sentinel
